This marvelous millefleurs pattern comes from a pashmina carpet made in the northern Indian region of Kashmir during the second half of the 18th century. The area comprising northern India and eastern Pakistan was significant for carpet weaving in the late 17th–18th centuries. Fabulous carpets bearing millefleurs and other floral decorations were typically crafted with fine knots and expensive pashmina wool. This particular carpet in The Met collection depicts an arched gateway leading to a flower-filled paradise, distinguished by the geometric nature of the motif.
